Like 8GB for swap and much more for the root directory which will be lost
space for vm storage if you use local storage for you vm's.
Proxmox 3.4 and newer has a graphical user interface with and "Options" button next to the
hard drive you choose for installation. Here you can adjust these settings.
I will show you how to change this and increase your swap to 20GB and make your root smaller to 10GB.
We will also change to filesystem from the default ext3 to ext4.

Proxmox VE 3.3 or older.
Installation
Put the Proxmox VE 3.3 or older installation CD into your server.
Boot from the CD.
Wait untill the Proxmox Logo appears with a commandline under it saying: "Boot:"
type: linux ext4 maxroot=10 swapsize=20
Press "ENTER"
Proxmox will now continue the installation with the settings you defined above.
Command Options:
linux ext4 sets partition format to ext4. Default is ext4.
hdsize=xx This sets the total amount of GB on the hard disk to be used for the proxmox installation
maxroot=xx sets the root partition size in GB
swapsize=xx sets the swap partition size in GB
maxvz=xx sets the maximum size in GB that the data partition will be.
minfree=xx sets the amount of free space in GB to remain on the disk after the proxmox installation
